What is BG05?

BG05, formally known as Guidance on the Design and Operation of Biomass Systems, was produced by the Combustion Engineering Association (CEA). The guidance was first published in 2019 and remains the industry reference document.

It addresses the risks, design requirements and operational needs of biomass-fuelled boiler systems, including fuel delivery, storage, combustion control and emissions compliance. This means ensuring fuel quality is consistent, handling and storage facilities are safe, and systems are designed to minimise fire, dust and explosion risks. The guidance also sets expectations for operator training, maintenance and environmental performance, helping sites to run biomass systems safely, efficiently and in line with regulations.

What does BG05 cover?

The guidance offers practical recommendations on:

  • Design standards for safe biomass systems
  • Day-to-day safe operation of biomass boilers
  • Fuel delivery, storage and handling procedures
  • Combustion control and efficiency measures
  • Managing ash disposal safely and responsibly
  • Fire, explosion and dust risk management
  • Operator training and competence requirements
  • Planned maintenance, inspections and testing
  • Environmental considerations and emissions compliance

Why BG05 matters

BG05 is not law, but it is the recognised UK guide for biomass systems. Following it helps operators demonstrate compliance with PSSR, PUWER, DSEAR and other safety regulations.

Biomass systems introduce specific risks such as variable fuel quality, fuel handling hazards and ash management issues. BG05 gives operators a clear framework to minimise these risks while ensuring reliable and sustainable operation.
