What is BG03?
BG03, known as Guidance on the Safe Operation of Blowdown Systems for Industrial Steam Boilers, was published by the Combustion Engineering Association (CEA).
It sets out how to manage the discharge of blowdown safely, including the use of blowdown vessels and pits, and how to remain compliant with UK safety law.
What does BG03 cover?
The guidance includes practical advice on:
- Safe methods for discharging boiler blowdown
- Correct design, installation and use of blowdown vessels
- Maintenance routines and inspection requirements
- Compliance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR)
- The need for a Written Scheme of Examination (WSE)
Why BG03 matters
BG03 is not legislation, but it is the recognised UK guide for users and competent persons introduction to blowdown systems. Following it helps operators prove compliance with PSSR and ensures that systems are inspected, maintained and operated in line with best practice.
Poor blowdown management can lead to equipment damage, scalding risks and regulatory breaches. BG03 gives operators a clear framework to reduce these risks and keep boiler operations safe.
