What is BG01?

BG01 stands for Guidance on Safe Operation of Steam Boilers. It’s the UK’s main guide for anyone who owns, manages or maintains (shell-type) steam boilers. Written by the Combustion Engineering Association (CEA) and SAFed. it sets out practical steps to keep boilers running safely and efficiently.

Put simply, it helps sites comply with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) and other health and safety laws.

What does it cover?

BG01 gives clear advice on what you need in place to run a steam boiler safely. That includes:

  • How to operate boilers day-to-day
  • How to make the most of modern controls and alarms
  • What level of supervision is needed, whether your boiler is fully attended or runs semi-unattended
  • How to train staff and prove they’re competent
  • How often to inspect, test and maintain your equipment
  • What to record and how to manage risk assessments
  • What to do if there’s a fault or emergency

One of the biggest points is that modern boilers can run safely without someone physically being near the equipment – but only if they’re fitted with the right safety systems and there are clear checks in place. BG01 sets out exactly what this should look like.Click our links for more details on boiler services or training

Why does it matter for steam boiler regulations?

BG01 isn’t the law, but it is the recognised guidence notice for shell steam boiler operation in the UK.

Having clear procedures, good training and proper records makes all the difference when proving you’re meeting your legal duties. Following BG01 is one of the easiest ways to do just that.
