What is HVO fuel?

HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil – a renewable diesel alternative made entirely from waste vegetable oils and fats. It’s created through a specialist process called hydrotreatment, which removes impurities and produces a clean-burning, high-quality fuel.

Unlike conventional biodiesel (FAME), HVO offers better combustion, stores well over time, and carries a much lower risk of contamination. It’s also a “drop-in” fuel, meaning it can often replace diesel or gas oil without needing major changes to your burner system.

Why use HVO in your burner system?

At Dunphy, we’re seeing more and more businesses look for cleaner fuels that don’t compromise on reliability or performance. HVO ticks all the right boxes.

Here’s why it’s gaining traction:

  • Easy to switch: HVO is compatible with many existing burner systems with little or no modification required.
  • Cleaner output: It can reduce COâ‚‚ emissions by up to 90 percent compared to traditional fossil fuels.
  • Smooth, reliable combustion: HVO burns cleanly, helping reduce soot and maintenance requirements.
  • Longer shelf life: It’s stable in storage and less prone to oxidation or microbial growth than other biofuels.

Dunphy burners and HVO: ready when you are

We’ve already developed burner systems that run on HVO, either as a standalone fuel or in combination with other fuels in a dual setup.

Our engineers are working with manufacturers, food producers, energy providers and more to help them make the transition. Whether you’re running on diesel, gas oil or heavy oil, we can configure or upgrade your system so it runs efficiently on HVO — helping you take a real step towards your net-zero targets.

What you get when you switch to HVO with Dunphy

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil – Frequently asked questions

Is HVO more expensive than diesel or gas oil?
Yes, the price per litre can be higher — but the environmental benefits, potential tax incentives, and improved reputation often outweigh the cost over time.

Can I use HVO in my current burner?
In many cases, yes. Most Dunphy burners can be adapted to run on HVO with only minor changes. We’re happy to review your setup and talk you through the options.

Is HVO suitable for large-scale burners?
Absolutely. HVO performs well in high-output systems and is already being used in a wide range of industrial settings.
